Sri Lanka Reduces List of Overseas Terrorist Groups

Sri Lanka’s government Sunday halved the number of overseas organizations it classifies as terrorists as part of efforts to aid reconciliation efforts with the Tamil community and reassign security resources after the island nation’s 27-year civil war.

All eight organizations removed from the list are advocacy groups for Tamils, and are based in the U.S., Canada, the U.K and Australia. Separatist group the Liberation Tamil Tigers of Eelam, which was defeated by Sri Lankan government forces in 2009, bringing an end to the conflict, remains banned.
